High School STEM Scholar Recognition with Alyssa Lind

Our April High School STEM Scholar Recognition event was a wonderful success. We honored 28 students from 10 Seattle area schools including Making Connections at the University of Washington. The recognition is for their expertise in math, science and technology. Many invited their parents and other family members to attend this celebration. It’s always moving to see these young women in person.

(More pictures at the bottom of the page) We’ve been doing this for more than 20 years. We honor 11th graders so they can use this important recognition on their college applications. Our criteria is to include students who self-identify as women or were assigned female at birth and self identify as non-binary.

Everyone enjoyed our keynote speaker, Alyssa Lind, Marine Science Interpretive Diver and Educator at the Seattle Aquarium. She told of her journey studying marine biology and recommended not just studying, but really getting involved in whatever is your chosen field.

Lind has really gotten involved: from scuba diving, to kelp, to sea turtle and shark restoration, to research and connecting with others about the ocean. She likes many different aspects of marine biology and working at the Seattle Aquarium allows her to experience lots of diversity. Every day is different.

The students we recognized are definitely skilled at math, science and technology, and many of them volunteer in their communities to help others. Their hobbies are vast including all kinds of sports, baking, art, music, fashion, and mountain climbing.

We wish them the best in achieving their dreams and goals which include astronomy, ethics, philosophy, pre-med, social justice, neuroscience, criminology, engineering, architecture, childhood education, biochemistry, and psycholinguistics - just to name a few!

Our branch members are liaisons to the schools and make connections with the teachers and counselors who select the students. Thanks to all those who were involved and special thanks to Liz and Pamela for organizing the program and introducing us to all these inspiring young students.
