Dr. Winifred Weter

1948-1951

Winifred joined the Seattle branch in 1930 and served as president from 1948-1951. She served during the 1949 AAUW National Convention which was held in Seattle.

She received her BA in Latin and Greek in 1929 from the University of Oregon. She received her MA in Greek in 1930, and completed her PhD in Classical Languages in 1933, both at the University of Chicago. She also studied at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, Greece from 1963 to 1964.

She worked for 40 years at Seattle Pacific University. Very few women, even PhDs, were being hired in 1934, but she got the job because she agreed to coach the women’s basketball team as well as teaching the classics. She coached the women’s basketball team for 15 years in addition to her teaching load.

Her mother, Helen Bush Weter, joined the Seattle Branch in 1905. She encouraged her daughter to join when she first received her BA from University of Oregon.

She loved travel and took many trips all over the world, and often returned to Greece and Italy.

She was a member of the Fellowship of Recollection, Seattle Society of Archeology, Classics Association of the Pacific Northwest, and the American Philological Association.

Dr. Weter loved AAUW and was an active member of the Seattle Branch all of her life. More info on Winifred Weter.

A long time Seattleite, she was born in 1909 and died in 2006 at the age of 96.

Acclaimed nationally for her service to children.

Longtime principal at the Woodside School for Retarded Children, member of the Council for Exceptional Children, and in 1968 became the Director of the King Co. Chapter of the Washington Association for Retarded Children. Attended and led meetings in London and all over the US.

Long time champion in her field, she fought hard for better educational facilities, recreation, training and job opportunities.

She received a Masters in Education and Social Worker’s Certificate at the University of Washington.

Miss May Dunn Ward

1937-1939

Dean of Women at the University of Washington. For such a remarkable women, very little is known. A few quotes on her were found from her contemporaries:

Our first outstanding event of 1935 was Alpha Omicron’s first campus affair at which our mothers and Miss May Dunn Ward and Miss Mary I. Bash, Dean and Assistant Dean of women respectively, were our honored guests. The event was especially worthwhile from the standpoint of the contacts made by individual girls to the Office of the Dean of Women. From notes of Bertha Pitts Campbell: The Founder We Knew.

1938: Twelve college Deans of Women got together at Dirtyface Lodge near Wenatchee to get acquainted and discuss different problems and issues. Miss May Dunn Ward, Dean from Seattle, met Miss Johnson, Dean from Bellingham and they traveled together by automobile and train to Wenatchee.  The twelve deans held a picnic supper at Soda Springs. In 1968 the UW Alumni Association gave women scholarships in the name of Miss May Dunn Ward, former Dean of Women.
