Tech Trek - Jr. High STEM Camp

Tech Trek is an exciting week-long, residential, hands-on STEM camp at Pacific Lutheran University for girls currently in 7th grade who show promise in math, science and/or technology. Classes are taught by excellent female scientists and the girls live in the college dorms. All girls are sponsored and we are especially looking for girls who might not otherwise be able to participate in a program like this.

Volunteer to get local girls to camp – made easy with templates and documentation.  This process takes place between January and April. We need volunteers to contact middle school math and science teachers to nominate girls for Tech Trek.  Then we need a team of volunteers to interview students and parents.

Tech Trek exposes young teens to possibilities in STEM that they might not otherwise experience, and it is such a pleasure to witness it.

High School STEM Recognition

Help spur on young STEM standouts! For more than 20 years we’ve been honoring high school girls for their skills in math, science and technology.  We seek volunteers to serve on the project committee. Each committee member contacts a participating school and requests STEM scholar nominations. Once those are received, the member communicates with those students until the program is complete for the year.

Tasks are generally accomplished using e-mail or phone, so don’t usually require trips to the school. The steps and timeline for each step of this project are well defined, and the tasks are not time-consuming.

College Scholarship Program

Do you love the idea of helping motivated women in financial need complete their college education? We welcome additional committee members any time.

In the fall the committee updates the scholarship eligibility criteria and application form. In late winter we get the word out to Washington colleges, social media, and some news outlets. In the spring the committee reviews applications, conducts finalist interviews, and works to publicize our winners.

Making Connections Mentoring Program

Making Connections (MC) is a college-readiness program for underserved students and their families in the greater Puget Sound area at the University of Washington Moris Women’s Center.

MC seeks to increase college enrollment and career interests in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields by providing four years of life-changing, wrap-around academic and enrichment services to students and their families. It combines the nuts and bolts of college readiness preparation with career exploration, academic tutoring, personal and professional mentorship, leadership development, ongoing professional enrichment, and a lifelong network of allies comprised of MC alumnae and supporters.

Mentors dedicate 4 to 6 hours a month to mentor/mentee bonding activities, providing student support as they prepare for college, and creating a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere.
