December Holiday Meeting and Tech Trek Celebration

Reitha Weeks led us in the Tech Trek Celebration. We had four of the eleven campers we sponsored for Tech Trek last summer plus some of their parents. It’s always fun to hear from them and learn what their biggest take-aways were. At our November meeting, Jenny Mashek, an attorney with the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, spoke about current issues with regard to immigration. NWIRP has several offices in Washington State, and their services to their clients are free and confidential. She emphasized how important it is for clients to consult with representation, because every situation is different and interpreting changing rules can be difficult for the lay person. Sharon, a current chief historian at the US Census in Washington DC, gave an engaging talk on her personal pathway from a graduate at West Point (USMA) to her current position. She pointed out that men often don’t need full knowledge or expertise to try for their next opportunity (comfortable with 60% qualifications) whereas women will wait until they have close to 100% of the qualifications necessary for a future position.
