Investing in Equity by Taxing Extreme Wealth with Carolyn Brotherton, PhD
Seattle Branch AAUW January 30, 2022

Our virtual January meeting highlighted economic issues in Washington State – leading into our preparation for Lobby Day activities.
Dr. Carolyn Brotherton from the Economic Opportunity Institute gave an excellent talk about the need for a more progressive system of taxation in order to raise revenue for core pillars of Washington State’s economy, including investments in K-12 and higher education, gender and racial equity and child care. She argued that this can be achieved by passing the current bill - HB 1406 - that proposes to tax extreme wealth.
Seattle Branch Public Policy Co-Chair Katherine Cleland followed with an update of plans for
AAUW Lobby Day on January 24, where members learned which bills to advocate during this
legislative session to support the AAUW mission in Washington State.

legislative session.
