Dr. Patricia Grayhall: Defying Norms in Love and Medicine

Our September program featured Dr. Patricia Grayhall, author of Making the Rounds: Defying Norms in Love and Medicine.

She’s a wonderful speaker and shared her personal and professional experiences in medical school while coming out as a lesbian in the 1960s. Although there were some very hard days for her, one of the things that saw her through was meeting up with a gay man, also afraid someone would find out. They took an apartment together, everyone thought they were lovers, and they have been good friends ever since.

Other things that kept her going were her challenging studies, a great sense of humor and she is quite tall. It always helps when most people have to look up to you.

She read some parts of her book and it was fascinating and profound. I can see why it was rated as one of the best 100 independently published books of 2022.

Her long time partner attended the meeting as well. The two women have worked together on another book, Golden Years and Silver Linings, which was recently published. This book is totally non-fiction - a lesbian romance where the women find each other in their 60s.

This meeting was a great kickoff to our new year.
