AAUW Seattle STEM Scholar Recognition
Cynthia Sheridan May 20, 2021
What a celebration! On April 28th, Seattle Branch AAUW recognized 36 high school seniors from the greater Seattle area for their academic achievement in STEM coursework. Almost all of the recipients turned out for this event via Zoom and we were able to hear their stories through a collection of videos created by each young woman in advance of our meeting.

Dr. Kelly Stevens, Assistant Professor of Bioengineering and Lab Medicine and Pathology at the University of Washington, was our guest speaker. She is an active bioengineer working from her basement during the pandemic and she spoke to us about her role in a network of academics calling on national funding agencies to address disparities in their support of Black researchers.

Her presentation was followed by a lively discussion involving branch members and the high school seniors.
Academic Scholar certificates were mailed to our scholars along with a check and a goodie box of AAUW mementos, including a special edition of the Seattle branch newsletter, The Catalyst, with biographies of our young achievers.
