Barriers to Success
November 23, 2023
At the November AAUW Diversity Officers meeting the topic of discussion was “Barriers to Success.” Across the United States, branches reported that their communities are mostly white and not diverse while their branch members are mostly white and gray haired. Several branches felt that although their branches were doing a good job of educating their members, they were not getting traction in the community. They felt that they were treading water and not moving forward. Branches reported that they were preaching to the choir while several branches did not want to discuss it because their community did not face any issues around diversity, equity, and inclusion. While branches discussed DEI issues at their Zoom and in-person meetings, they feel “uncomfortable” discussing them outside of branch or committee meetings.
How have branches positively overcome the barriers? Take one step at a time. One branch covers DEI definitions. A branch in Colorado worked with the Diversity Office at a nearby college. They formed an allyship with another organization on campus and are working together. Seek and work with likeminded organizations. Another branch, which was praised for their excellent programs, encourages attendees to follow up with an action. Branches also share their successes with other branches.
