Dr. Sophia Jordán Wallace is an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Washington and she specializes in Latino politics, immigration, and policy.
We are excited to have Dr. Wallace join us to share her presentation focused on the stereotypes that plague depictions of immigrants and the distorted beliefs that make immigration reform in Congress difficult. She will also discuss the rise of misinformation surrounding the 2020 Election and how the study of the polarization of public opinion regarding immigration over the last thirty years can lead to eventual improvements in the political status-quo.
Dr. Wallace received her B.A. from UC San Diego and her Ph.D. from Cornell University. One of her current projects is working on her book, United We Stand: Latino Representation in Congress, that examines the impact of Latino representation and the ways Latino legislators serve the interests of Latinos.
Her work has been published in various journals, including the American Journal of Political Science, and has also co-authored, Walls, Cages, and Family Separation: Race and Immigration in the Trump Era, which was published in 2020. She is a co-founder and co-organizer of SPIRE (Symposium on the Politics of Immigration, Race, and Ethnicity) and the Director of the Washington Institute for the Study of Inequality and Race (WISIR). She is also currently an editor of Political Research Quarterly.
