Location: Center for Urban Horticulture

AAUW Seattle has been recognizing and honoring high school students for their talents in math, science and technology since 2001. We believe it’s critical to honor and encourage them to continue their studies in STEM fields. Every year in April we hold a reception and invite the awardees and their families to celebrate their considerable success. This year we will honor more than 30 11th graders who self-identify as women or were assigned female at birth and self-identify as non-binary.
We work with a number of Seattle area public high schools and Making Connections at the University of Washington Women’s Center. All awardees are nominated by their teachers or counselors. Our members engage with the schools, facilitate the selections, and answer any questions.
Our keynote speaker will be Darienne Highsmith. As a Project Manager with the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in Seattle, Highsmith oversees the communities of USGBC Oregon and USGBC Washington.
With a background in environmental consulting, wilderness rangering, and research in geospatial programming for fish habitat management, she is eager to share her journey of breaking into impactful roles at a young age. She’s particularly passionate about inspiring young women and is excited to impart her experiences and insights. Additionally, she’s happy to discuss opportunities to get involved with USGBC locally, including volunteer opportunities.
The nonprofit organization is dedicated to promoting environmental sustainability, economic prosperity, and social equity through transforming the building industry. They work closely with communities, governments, businesses, and individuals to advance green building practices and LEED certification nationwide (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design),
