Beyond Crisis: Feminist Leadership and Public Universities with Dr. Sarah Elwood

Beyond Crisis: Feminist Leadership and Public Universities with Dr. Sarah Elwood

Saturday, March 16, 2024
10:00AM - 11:00AM

Location: Kenyon Hall
7904 35th Ave. SW
Seattle, 98126

Dr. Elwood will reflect on some of the enduring lessons of her five years as chair of UW’s Geography department in the midst of overlapping crises – pandemic, political violence, dwindling budgets, personnel shortages, unprecedented levels of precarity and distress – and the tenets of feminist practice and accountable relationality that continue to guide her leadership. Feel free to come early at 9:30 am for visiting and networking.

Elwood’s research and teaching focus on urban geographies and creative politics forged by marginalized communities fighting for justice, equity and self-determination. She uses relational analyses to take apart impoverishment as an outcome of intersecting political projects, racial oppression, economic injustice, and socio-legal control.

She has studied the use of geographic information systems (GIS) by various neighborhood groups including:

• Digital apps used in low-barrier employment by unsheltered people living and working in public space
• Poverty politics advanced by unsheltered people and their allies
• Groups fighting gentrification

This work has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the National Geographic Education Foundation, the Spencer Foundation and others. She is coeditor of Abolishing Poverty: Toward Pluriverse Politics and Futures (University of Georgia, 2023), Relational Poverty Politics (University of Georgia, 2018) and Qualitative GIS (Sage 2009).
