Kraken Player Development Coach Katelyn Parker will describe the Kraken youth program she helps lead in Seattle. This program focuses on recruiting, sponsoring and training a diverse group of young hockey players, both male and female, so the sport will be representative of the American population. Additionally, they are committed to putting women in leadership roles in its organization. Come hear the whole story.

Come for appetizers and conversation followed by the Kraken talk. Limited seating, we want our members and their guests to have first choice so please RSVP early .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Participation in youth and amateur hockey has been on an upward trend in the United States, growing by 190 percent during the last pre-pandemic season in 2018–19. That’s fueled especially by girls and women, whose participation in the sport is up 34 percent over the last decade.

While Seattle has always been a hockey town, the Kraken’s arrival has heightened interest in the game. Opportunities for girls and women in the sport were pretty limited in the area until recently. When Jennifer Wood of the Western Washington Female Hockey Association (WWFHA) first signed her daughter up for beginner’s hockey in 2009, she was stunned to discover that she was the only girl: “I was like, Where are the girls? Why are there no girls playing?”

Now she feels it all adds to the normalization of girls and women in hockey. “The most important thing that’s happening is not just cute little girls playing hockey in pink helmets anymore. It’s women being accepted in leadership roles and valued for their contributions, which is contributing to the growth of girls hockey.” Read more in this Seattle Met article.  e Kraken is doing to prioritize women in hockey:
