High School STEM Scholars Recognition with Dr. Kiran Dhillon

High School STEM Scholars Recognition with Dr. Kiran Dhillon

Wednesday, April 19, 2023
7:00PM - 9:00PM

Location: Center for Urban Horticulture
3501 NE 41st St,
Seattle, WA 98105

We have been recognizing and honoring high schoolers identifying as women for their talents in math, science and technology since 2001.  We feel it’s critical to honor and encourage them to continue their studies in STEM fields. Every year in April we have a big reception and invite the awardees and their families to celebrate their considerable success.

We work with a number of Seattle area high schools, an academy, and Making Connections at the University of Washington Women’s Center.  All awardees are nominated by their teachers or counselors.  Our members engage with the schools, facilitate the selections, and answer any questions. Last year we were able to honor 36 young women.

Dr. Kiran Dhillon will be our keynote speaker. She has devoted her career to finding a cure for cancer and will share her path in cancer research and what it takes to become a scientist.

Dr. Dhillon received a Ph.D. in Genetics from the University of Washington, where she studied the genetic changes that can lead to cancer. She then did a postdoctoral fellowship at Fred Hutch Cancer Center, where she studied the genetics and genomics of why breast and ovarian cancers stop responding to chemotherapy.

While at Fred Hutch, Dr. Dhillon co-founded Hutch United, an organization that promotes the success and retention of under-represented and other minorities in science. She then joined the Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer as Director of Scientific Programs, where she oversaw an international ovarian cancer research grants program, scientific symposia, and content for a breast and ovarian cancer community education program.

Currently, she is the Executive Director of the Cancer Vaccine Institute at the University of Washington. As ED, she directs the overall strategy and administration of the organization in its mission to develop vaccines that prevent and treat breast, ovarian, colon, bladder, prostate, and lung cancers.
